Diary #13

This week i completed my target audience video, so decided i would do some more similar product research. I looked at how much i had done and thought i should analyse some more double page spreads.
I chose two that were from NME magazine, this is because this is my ideal example, therefore felt i might see some of my own magazine reflected in this. Luckily, i did. In my first double page spread i analysed, i noticed there were two photos of a man, almost mirroring each other, accept he had different expressions in each one. This made me feel content with my own magazine, as my second double page spread does exactly this accept with my model Alice. I felt i had successfully grasped what NME magazine tries to portray to it's audiences, making me feel as if i have created a magazine that will effectively appeal to my target audience also.

After this, i began working on cam studio videos. I have done one for each page of my magazine. I opened each page on Adobe Photoshop and hid all the layers. I then began recording on cam studio and showed each layer one at a time. I felt this would be an effective thing to document on my blog as it will show all the stages i had to go through when creating my magazine. I also thought i could take a clip of each of these videos and then use it in my final Evaluation Documentary, when i am discussing the process i went through to complete my magazine.

DPS Analysis

I decided to do some further similar product research, to gather more knowledge on how i can make my magazine as visually appealing as possible for my audience. I also wanted to look at the type of images that were used on DPS's as i was feeling uneasy about my images used.
I now feel a lot happier with the choices i have made. By looking at the first DPS i have analysed here, the images of the male are very similar to the images i have used on my second double page spread, which makes me feel as if i have made the right decisions to ensure my magazine appeals to my target audience. I chose to analyse NME as it is my style model for my own designs.

Diary Entry #12

Today I have been working on my audience profile. Now that I have finished my magazine, I decided I would get feedback from my target audience. I asked three boys and two girls that were my target audience to sit around a table and look at my magazine. I then asked them questions about my magazine, such as ‘what stands out the most to you?’, ‘is the front image effective?’
I got interesting feedback, making me feel positive about my finished product.

Diary Entry #11

I have been busy this week working on my double page spreads. I was having problems with white spaces on all three pages and was trying to find the best, effective way to fill them. Without making the page messy or unappealing to its audience.
I eventually decided for my second double page spread I would take a photo of ripped up magazine pages from other rock/indie magazines and CD’s spread over a table. I did this using a Cannon and stood on a chair in order to capture the page as best as possible. After taking this I put it behind my two images in the middle of the page and faded it into the text, therefore it filled the text however did not overpower the page.
For my first double page spread I decided to place images of electric guitars in the background. This is because they are a huge symbol of rock music and help to reinforce the genre of the particular magazine. This image fits in nicely with my close up and text and also makes the page less plain.

My final product has changed dramatically from my first drafts.

WHAT HAVE I CHANGED/ADAPTED?

FRONT COVER

I also changed the font of 'WIN FREE TICKETS TO READING 2012' on my front cover. This is because I feel the faded, downtown-like font makes the magazine look more appealing and rebellious.

CONTENTS PAGE

On my contents page I added a FACEBOOK symbol, this is because it will appeal to younger people, highlighting that my magazine will relate to younger audiences more. It also ensures my magazine is current with zeitgeist. Meaning my magazine is aware of current distribution techniques through social networking, giving my magazine and advantage as it will be easily marketed through Facebook and Twitter. I also added more photos, as on my draft there was a lot of white spaces, making my magazine look as if it is not value for its money. I added photos that would appeal to my audiences, mostly females. In the background of my contents page there are faint images of a tape and head phones - both connotating my magazine is of the music genre. These also help to make my page look less dull and busier. I put light grey boxes behind my band index and headings for each page. This is because I felt it would help to section off my text from my images, making the page more organised and less messy. Also easier to navigate around. It also helps to make my text stand out; highlighting how much text I have on that page (value for money). I made the photo of 'Alice Liberty' a lot larger than the other images, this is because it reinforces that this is my feature artist and was the cover model, therefore the most exclusive/exciting article in my magazine.


DOUBLE PAGE SPREADS

As you can see, I added two more double page spreads. This was partly because my article was too long to fit onto one page. However, was also because I had taken many photos in my photo shoot and wanted the opportunity to show more of them. I feel very content with my finished product. Every image used is of the highest quality. I think I have created a creative and unique magazine, one of which that would hugely appeal to my target audience. I stuck to the colour scheme of red and black, however changed the red to a darker burgundy colour. This is because I feel the primary colour of bright red looked too childish and made my magazine look less professional. I put boxes behind my pull quotes also, to emphasise the colour scheme I have chosen and also to make them stand out more. I feel they shape the pages more, making the magazine look busier - therefore worth it's price.

On my first double page spread I made the grey bar along the top a lot larger, to highlight this is the start of my article. I made the text at the beginning of this larger also, in order to fill more space and emphasise this is just the introduction to the main article, and the following pages will have more writing. To begin with I had a plain white background, however after contemplating I decided to place an image of electric guitars in the background. This is because they are a huge symbol of rock music and help to reinforce the genre of the particular magazine. This image fits in nicely with my close up and text and also makes the page less plain.

On my second double page spread there are four images. I used two photos placing them into Polaroid like boxes, in order to section them off from the text effectively. In the centre of the page there are two almost identical photos of Alice Liberty with her hand on her hip - signifying her rebellious attitude. However, in one photo she has a smiley face and the other a serious face. Underneath each image says 'GOOD?' and 'BAD?' this will appeal to my target audience as they will feel she has contrasting attitude, both a good and a naughty side - which will thrill my readers. Behind these images there is a photo I took of ripped magazines and CD's, faded into the text, making the page more visually appealing.
My last double page spread has a high quality extreme close up of the characters face, where she looks attractive and mysterious, urging the reader to read on. There are also a row of photos of my feature artist in funny poses, this highlights her fun side, making her character seem interesting to read about, therefore further selling my magazine.

INSPIRATION

Here are a group of images i used to help me during my photoshoot. These are images i closely studied, looking at each models body language and thought about how i could incorperate that into my own work. These photo's helped me a lot, as i had the opportunity to achknowledge proffessional, eye-grasping poses that might help make my magazine seem more professional.

I chose these particular images as i feel they connotate confidence and feistyness also. Which is the way i would like my feature artist to be portrayed.

Evidence of creative ideas

I was having trouble deciding what i wanted to have in the background of my second double paged spread. When i asked my target audience what they thought they replied 'there is too much white in the background'. I tried a variety of things to make my page stand out more and look more professional. One of which was using brushes such as luminous swirls to curl around my feature models body. I found this didnt suit the genre of my magazine. So decided to fill my page with ripped magazines and CDs, i stood on a chair to take these photos to get a goo high angle shot, looking professional and creative.
